Letter from PSHANs CEO Dr. Tinuola Akinbolagbe: Impact Through Collective Effort

I have quite a lofty dream. As a seasoned healthcare professional, I realize the difficulties we may face, but my vision is to improve healthcare for all Nigerians. Over the course of the last year at PSHAN, I have focused on driving major initiatives to advance healthcare in Nigeria. Stepping into the shoes of CEO at PSHAN was a natural fit because the company’s vision for the future so closely aligns with my own: To create a Nigeria where everyone has equal access to quality and affordable healthcare.

Every country faces challenges, inadequate funding and systems that must keep up with our rapidly changing world. That said, I believe the African continent has brilliant minds, vibrant culture and incredible potential for growth. I believe there is hope – and lots of it.

PSHAN’s core philosophy of “collective responsibility and synergistic impact” remains at the heart of everything we do.

During the course of 2021, we achieved a great level of success across our programs, making all our strategic efforts and collective mindset absolutely worth it.

PSHAN’s achievement highlights during 2021:

  • We led an advocacy campaign geared towards the ravaging Covid-19 pandemic across media houses with a wide listenership – particularly radio houses.
  • We led discussions on health at the nationally celebrated Nigeria Economic Summit in the nation’s capital.
  • We secured a donation of ₦50,000,000 from the AIG Imoukhuede Foundation in support of ADHFP (Adopt A Health Facility Program).
  • We are proud to be an organisation that is recognised by BBC Africa, CNBC Africa, Rand Merchant Bank Media Outlook, ThisDay news and Business Day.

I am incredibly grateful to my team and proud of the milestones that we reached – and we will continue to work towards our primary goals in 2022. I am confident that anything is possible when you work together. As Helen Keller famously said: “Alone we can do so little. Together we can do so much.”

In the spirit of working together, some of our biggest goals for 2022 are to:

  • Meet our audacious goals by raising funding partners for PSHAN to implement its vital, life-changing programmes.
  • Launch our revolutionary flagship programme, ADHFP, Adopt -a- Healthcare-Facility Program, and raise ₦5bn in funding to implement the first phase.
  • Partner with and establish 20 primary healthcare centres to improve the lives of local communities in desperate need of accessible health as part of our ADHFP programme.
  • Develop impactful relationships and partnerships across multiple sectors to support our goal of making a difference in the livelihoods of the Nigerian nation.
  • Raise global awareness for the impact and value of the collaboration between communities, the public, and private sectors.

Our vision for the ADHFP:

Our frontline programme this year is the Adopt – A – Health Facility Program (ADHFP). It will run over six years and aims to establish at least one world-standard Primary Healthcare Centre (PHC) in each of Nigeria’s 774 Local Government Areas (LGAs).

Rising inequality, poverty, the impact of climate change, and the emergence of complex disease patterns, combined with financial pressures, have highlighted the critical importance of resilient healthcare infrastructure. This is a massive undertaking, as each PHC requires security, potable water, electricity, building, staff, HR resources and remuneration, medicines, equipment, furniture and furnishings, staff training, monitoring and evaluation, quality control, and an end-to-end value chain.

Last year, PSHAN was at the forefront of collaboration with local and international communities, addressing the need for primary healthcare for millions of Nigerians. We are fortunate to have industry leaders on our board who are committed to improving healthcare standards and outcomes in Nigeria.

I look forward to driving all of PSHAN’s 2022 initiatives, including the Covid-19 Awareness Project, the Health Databank Project, the Pandemic, Insecurity and Emotional Effects Programme and, of course, our flagship ADHFP – all of which will be game-changers in our healthcare system.

Expect to see high-impact programs from PSHAN in the years to come as we focus on addressing the healthcare needs of all Nigerians.

Humanity and empowerment are possible through collective impact. If you are willing to join us in  opening doors to better healthcare across Nigeria, we look forward to partnering with you as join other forward-thinking leaders in the support of Nigerian healthcare system.
