PSHAN: Leadership in Healthcare
For many years, Nigeria’s healthcare network has been considered one of the worst in the world. As a result, healthcare professionals, leaders, and managers must focus on solutions to the core of the problem: equitable care for all and targeted steps to improve the current healthcare system.
The World Health Organization describes leadership and governance as the most important building blocks of any health system. Yet Nigeria faces a problem. Many publications talk about how leadership systems in Nigeria’s healthcare system need a radical transformation to effect change.
Poor leadership, however, is not the only stumbling block facing Nigeria’s health systems.
We have an alarming deficit in the number of qualified doctors. With the genuine issue of brain drain further affecting the quality of our healthcare system, it is estimated that Nigeria will have a shortage of 50,120 doctors and 137, 359 nurses by 2030. On top of this, we only have 0.9 hospital beds per 10 000 patients – which is less than half the global average of 2.3. Due to this lack of infrastructure and resources, an estimated 5,000 patients travel abroad for medical treatment every month.
While it is clear that Nigeria faces massive stumbling blocks, we believe that as healthcare professionals and leaders, we must focus on the core of our mission and our ultimate responsibility: to provide equitable care and continue our work to improve the current state of our healthcare system.
PSHAN takes our commitment to drive innovation in healthcare very seriously, and we have a board of leaders committed to improving the health outcomes in Nigeria. While one can choose to focus on the individual leads, we also believe in the power of the collective leadership team to drive meaningful change forward together.
At PSHAN We Believe That:
True leadership has a solid plan, with everyone working toward a vision for the future. Our vision at PSHAN is to create a Nigeria where everyone has equitable access to quality and affordable healthcare. It’s an ambitious goal, but it’s at the heart of everything we do, and we are working hard to make it a reality for the people of Nigeria.
True leadership fosters innovation and change, and our core programmes focus on impact, sustainability, and transformation.
True leadership builds effective teams, and at PSHAN we strive for excellence in everything we do and are committed to providing the highest quality services.
Our commitment to improving access to healthcare drives us to do more every day, and when we perform our duties, we do so with little consideration for personal gain. We care – not just about each other – but about our partners, the communities we serve, and the quality of our work.
The healthcare industry in Nigeria is facing turbulent times, and we need good leaders more than ever. And we need to collaborate – now more than ever.
With the help of private sector stakeholders and PSHAN members, we can accomplish a significant collective impact.
