The GAVI STEP Programme: A New Approach to Learning
GAVI STEP is an innovative programme that combines traditional learning with on-the-job training in order to help participants develop their problem-solving skills and foster effective team-building approaches.
Why we created GAVI STEP
The goal of the GAVI STEP is to provide participants with the knowledge and skills necessary to lead a successful supply chain operation. The programme will also give participants a better understanding of how supply chain management works, which is an important aspect of healthcare.
GAVI STEP has five key objectives:
- Advocate for adopting the Strategic Training Executive Programme (STEP) initiative to the National Logistics Working Group (NLWG).
- Provide support to the National Primary Health Care Development Agency (NPHCDA) for the enrolment of 50 participants on the online STEP platform.
- Support GAVI to identify and train the in-country organisation leading the STEP facilitation.
- Support GAVI, the International Federation of Pharmaceutical Wholesalers (IFPW) and the in-country organisation to deliver the one-week classroom training.
- Support the STEP Mentorship phase by identifying and engaging private-sector mentors for public health leaders.
How GAVI STEP works
The GAVI STEP programme is an innovative new way of teaching that could change how we learn forever. It takes leadership development from global logistics company UPS and adapts them to immunization supply chains.
In the long term, this learning model could be the solution developing countries need to help their immunization systems function sustainably and independently. By partnering with private sector organizations that have already overcome many of the same challenges, key immunization workers can grow their experience and open channels for future collaboration and innovation.
Overall, the programme represents an opportunity to build a stronger foundation of expertise for the immunization systems of East Africa, protecting children from preventable diseases.
Innovative training programmes like GAVI STEP are key to unlocking Africa’s potential. Through collaborative and technically enhanced experiential learning, we can equip the next generation with the tools they need to thrive.
