ADHFP: Reducing Maternal Mortality in Nigeria

At PSHAN, we are committed to improving the health and wellness of our nation. We believe that every citizen, from the moment they are born, should have access to quality healthcare. Through our Adopt-A-Healthcare-Facility Programme (ADHFP), we seek to ensure this becomes a reality.

One of the key objectives of ADHFP is to reduce mortality rates, particularly maternal mortality in Nigeria. Maternal mortality is the death of a woman during pregnancy, at delivery, or soon after delivery.

Maternal mortality in Nigeria

While many factors contribute to Nigeria’s high maternal mortality rate, one of the most important is a lack of access to quality primary healthcare.

Unfortunately, because of the current state of Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) in Nigeria, women do not have access to the care they need. Most PHCs available to women merely exist in name but lack adequate personnel and facilities. Others only consist of a room or two with benches and personnel who are either impassioned or overwhelmed and overworked.

In hard-to-reach communities, women often travel long distances to find an adequate healthcare facility. This can be particularly challenging during pregnancy and childbirth when women need timely medical care.

While some progress has been made in recent years to improve the state of primary healthcare in Nigeria, much more needs to be done. That is why we created ADHFP.

How ADHFP aims to help reduce maternal mortality in Nigeria

ADHFP aims to establish at least one world-class PHC in each of Nigeria’s 774 Local Government Areas (LGAs) and provide affordable quality healthcare to the poor and vulnerable.

By establishing and revitalizing PHCs across Nigeria, we aim to improve access to quality and affordable healthcare. This will ensure that more women can access the care they need. By improving the current state of PHCs across Nigeria, we aim to help reduce Nigeria’s high maternal mortality rate.
