PROJECT SUMMARY
Diarrhoea remains one of the leading causes of child mortality in Nigeria, particularly in rural communities where access to clean water, sanitation, and medical care is limited. This project, through the Private Sector Health Alliance of Nigeria (PSHAN), aims to integrate a comprehensive diarrhea prevention, treatment, and community education program in rural communities in Northern Nigeria to save 10,000 rural Nigerian children from diarrhea.
CHALLENGE
According to the WHO, diarrhoea is the second leading cause of death among children under five, with Nigeria among the most affected countries. The key contributors include:
- Lack of access to clean drinking water
- Poor sanitation and hygiene practices
- Limited awareness about diarrhea prevention and treatment
- Inadequate supply of Oral Rehydration Therapy (ORT) and zinc supplements
Children in rural areas suffer the most due to poor healthcare infrastructure, malnutrition, and high rates of waterborne diseases. Without urgent intervention, thousands of preventable deaths will continue to occur.

SOLUTION
Our project, through PSHAN’s Adopt-A-Healthcare Facility Programme (ADHFP), aims to raise 100,000 USD to do the following:
- Provide life-saving treatment to children in rural communities (ORS, zinc, and intravenous fluids) within selected communities in Northern Nigeria to at least 10,000 children suffering from diarrhea.
- Improve access to clean water and sanitation in rural communities by including water filters and chlorination tablets to at least 5,000 households to reduce contamination risks and the spread of water borne diseases.
- Train/retrain 500 healthcare workers and facility staff on diarrhea prevention and treatment.
- Educate 20,000 caregivers and parents on hygiene, safe water practices, nutrition, first aid, and danger signs of diarrhea.
- Encourage and support referrals to PHCs for complicated cases of diarrhea.
IMPACT MEASUREMENT AND REPORTING
We will track the following key performance indicators (KPIs):
- Number of children receiving ORS and zinc treatment.
- Reduction in diarrhea-related hospitalizations in target areas.
- Percentage increase in access to clean drinking water.
- Number of caregivers trained in hygiene and safe water practices.
- Community feedback on programme effectiveness.
Reports will be shared with donors through GlobalGiving updates, including testimonies from beneficiaries and impact assessment data.
