THE ADOPT-A-HEALTHCARE-FACILITY PROGRAMME (ADHFP): WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW

In 2020, Mr Aigboje Aig-Imoukhuede CON planted a seed that would grow to become one of the most impactful initiatives in the Nigerian health sector.

The ‘Adopt-A-Healthcare-Facility-Programme’ (ADHFP) is driven by the belief that the African continent will continue to carry the burden of high disease mortality long after the rest of the world has overcome such challenges unless we address the poor state of healthcare systems at the primary level.

The primary goal of ADHFP is to establish Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs) across Nigeria’s 774 Local Government Areas and apply market-based reforms to provide affordable quality healthcare to the poor and vulnerable. This initiative will ensure better health outcomes for everyone living in Nigeria.

The State of Primary Healthcare Centres in Nigeria

Nigeria is “The Giant of Africa”. Our success in the literary world, international music charts, and academia exemplify how deeply we believe in excellence.

However, our healthcare system paints an entirely different picture. It falls short of the excellence of which we know we are capable. It is there where we need to focus our efforts.

We envision a Nigeria where every child, adult, and elder can walk into a healthcare facility and know that they will receive world-class healthcare. And we believe that PHCs can ensure this becomes a reality for every Nigerian.

The Advantages of ADHFP

The ADHFP is a multi-impact initiative with several benefits which include saving lives; improving health outcomes; job creation and gender empowerment. Others include a reduction in mortality rates; improved public sector accountability; female gender empowerment; increased uptake of micro-health insurance and successful health policy reform.

Project Update

It is with great pleasure that we announce three distinguished patrons have made significant contributions to improving health outcomes in Nigeria:

  • Mr Aliko Dangote (GCON), through his foundation (ADF), has committed to adopting 44 PHCs in Kano State, Nigeria.
  • Mr Herbert Omyewumbu Wigwe through his foundation (HOW) has adopted 23 PHCs across all the Local Government Areas in Rivers state.
  • Mr Aig-Aigboje Imoukhuede through his foundation (AIG) is adopting 23 PHCs across all the Local Government Areas in Edo State.

Before these three generous contributions, we had 91 PHCs adopted out of our target of 774, and now that number has increased to 181.

We would like to thank the Aliko Dangote Foundation, Herbert Omyewumbu Wigwe Foundation, Aig-Imoukhuede Foundation, and all of our ADHDP adopters for their continued commitment to improving the current state of healthcare in Nigeria.

This quarter, we are looking to revitalise two pilot projects, one in Delta State and the other in Bauchi State, and engagement with stakeholders at the government and community level has seen some increase. Documents and memoranda between parties have been signed, and local contractors/vendors have been contacted to make their input prior to kickoff.

We have made great strides, but we still have a long way to go.
