World Population Day

Nigeria is synonymous with incredible wildlife, majestic mountains, and extensive forests. The only thing exceeding its natural beauty is the cultural magnificence of its people. Boasting a bustling metropolitan with a population of 206 million people, Nigeria is an ever-evolving country and continues to support the development of its people. PSHAN has been at the forefront of improving the lives of the entire population by improving access to primary healthcare.

What is World Population Day? Commemorated on July 11, World Population Day is a global annual event aimed at increasing awareness of global population issues. The Governing Council of the United Nations Development Programme inaugurated this day in 1989; on the approximate date, the world’s population exceeded six billion people.

World Population Day seeks to raise awareness of numerous population issues such as access to adequate healthcare, poverty, education and human rights.

West African health systems have endured the burden of communicable and non-communicable diseases for decades. While the world progressed, we were left to deal with health issues we did not have the resources to address. But with resilience and true African spirit, those issues became the building blocks for establishing PSHAN.

Our mission is to make a change and ensure that the future of healthcare in Nigeria is sustainable, so that future generations benefit from the fruits of our collective labour. We want to live in a nation where  a pregnant mother has no issue accessing primary health care for her unborn child and where the elderly can rest knowing their chronic health needs are cared for.

Becoming a healthy population

Did you know according to the book Disease and Mortality in Sub-Saharan Africa there is, at minimum, a decade difference in the life expectancies in the African region compared to the other areas of the world? This is partly due to the fragile state of our healthcare systems. With a consistent increase in population density, the need for adequate healthcare is more important than ever. Our goal is to restore confidence in our people and provide them access to the primary health care they deserve.

PSHAN, in collaboration with our various partners and programs, strives to perform at the highest possible level to deliver successful healthcare initiatives and encourages activities that promote reproductive health and family planning awareness.

We are proud of who we are and what we’ve managed to build in aid of our people. We strive to secure a healthy future for Nigerians and ensure a sustainable future for the population of our country.
