Covid-19 Awareness Programme 2021
(CAP-2021)

Over 254 million people have contracted the coronavirus disease globally from the start of the pandemic till date. Those who have contracted the disease have had to deal with long convalescence periods with many suffering complications such as liver damage, kidney diseases and other illnesses which affect their capacity to lead healthy lives. Global health crises (such as the COVID-19 pandemic) asides crippling economies and stifling economic advancement, threaten to overwhelm the already overstretched health systems, disrupt global supply chains, and cause disproportionate devastation of the livelihoods of people

The head of Memberships and Partnerships, Ota Akhigbe was the guest on the first session of the radio show held at Classic (93.7) FM. She gave a brief with statistics on the impact of covid 19 globally and specifically (Congo and Nigeria), some factors militating against the effective control of the virus, measures that can be taken to prevent the spread of the virus and a call to action on steps to be taken to promote vaccination, quality of information, awareness, and advocacy. (See fig. A in appendix)

Objectives

Misinformation and ineffective risk communication have been identified as one of the factors militating against the effective control of the coronavirus disease and other epidemics within Nigeria and globally. The economic and health implications of the pandemic sets the background for the COVID-19 Awareness Project. The increase in COVID-19 cases worsened by, lock down and the effect of the disease on our economy/all over the world are signals to show that no one is invincible to this disease.

Through the COVID-19 Awareness Project tagged Candid Conversations on COVID-19 to be aired
over TV and Radio for a period of 12 months, PSHAN seeks to:

  • To advocate for the urgent need for resilient and robust health systems that are far reaching to vulnerable people and those in vulnerable situations.
  • To raise awareness, exchange information, provide quality education, advocacy programmes, scientific knowledge, and best practices on epidemics at local, regional, national, and global levels as effective measures to prevent and respond to epidemics/pandemics
  • Support the activities of government with public enlightenment and advocacy around covid-19 vaccine rollout in Nigeria through different health promotion campaigns.
  • Create awareness on preventing and managing future pandemics/epidemics
